Urban Situation

Scenes of night were a rarity in art history until the duel advents of electric lights and photography. Here, available light magnified by the extension of the exposure time, and the apparently casual framing of the shot results in a scene that is simultaneously familiar, strange, sinister, and clearly urban. It is an unmistakably twentieth century image.
