Born and raised in Oaxaca, Mexico, Fulgencio says of this work; I represent the way in which members of Oaxacan musical bands sit in a circle, facing each other, thus the use of the circular motifs. The central figure is a masked person holding a basket on her head. She walks through streets and markets selling her products. Nature, symbolized here by the birds, accompanies her as a means of expressing freedom. The three round forms in the upper part of the piece are lanterns, which are used to illuminate the nighttime processions that are so common in our many celebrations. –Artist statement
