In my work I use the language of formal abstraction to articulate my wonder at the world, and to examine the patterns and structures that unite, both metaphorically and literally, all things of the world. As in Islamic art, with its proscription against the ‘graven image,’ I prefer to limit my vocabulary to essential forms that originate in the underlying geometric structures of nature. This not only keeps the emotional resonance in the paintings open, but also gives me more freedom to explore what the paint itself offers. I suppose it is in the paint, as visceral and sensual material, where my heart really lies. –Artist statement
