Tiaras have traditionally been worn to flaunt the wealth of a family or nation. The Importance of Good Manners was conceived as a way to celebrate and simultaneously poke fun at some of the social characteristics that Seattle is known for. Seattle has a reputation as a nice city; we are charitable, hospitable and oh, so politically correct. I have lived in this city since 1981 and have always considered it a community with a conscience. I hope we continue to pride ourselves in the attributes for which I've decorated it. –Artist statement
