A trip to Rome in 1990 inspired the artist to create this work.  She became interested in the surface deterioration of the architecture and outdoor sculpture, as well as the marks of age in the paintings and frescoes in the museums and churches.  Feeling that they did not seem to project an image of immortality, but of mortality, the artist wanted to respond by creating a play in her own work between the content of the image and the surface content.

These paintings are a part of an ongoing series of work centered on fragmented body parts. Starting with computer scans of body parts made directly from models lying on the surface of a flat bed scanner, the artist completes the work with pastel on top of the prepared surface of dried plaster over gesso.
