Freidlander has an international reputation as a photographer of gritty urban scenes.  He was invited to Washington State to photograph the local scenery.  Instead of sweeping landscapes, he made intimate compositions, concentrating on regional flora.  One can almost sense his wonder at the delicacy of these plants.  They seem a long distance from the streets of his native New York City.
