Red Coyote for Pitsap is a print I made in memory of my late father, Alfred Leo Smith (Smith vs Oregon Supreme Court case). He is a real trickster with a fierce sense of dry humor. “Red Coyote” is his self-selected restaurant “Indian Name.” The concept was, when the hostess would call table for Red Coyote and we would walk by, the audience wouldn’t be disappointed when seeing a “real Indian” for the first time. I think it was one of his ways of fighting back through the thick racism of white supremacy that engulfs living in the state of Oregon. –Artist statement
