Con-Tain-Her

In “CON-TAIN-HER” a female body (mine) is literally, trapped, defined and measured by “the text.” I have been interested in feminist and postmodern discourses on the operations of language, how it breaks the world into categories in order to create meaning and secure control. It is argued that because “women” are less willing to give up their inner-subjectivity to become a demanding linguistic “I” that objectifies and symbolically controls objects of desire; they cannot begin to express the “truth” of their own situation and are condemned to struggle in a world of alien values. –Artist statement
