The traditional approach in representational art is to treat the picture frame as if it were a window frame and the painting (or photograph) as if it were a world beyond that window frame.  Here  are the multiple frames reinforce that illusion, as if we had installed a picture window in this hallway, and you had a view out over an overcast Northwest scene.
