Arnold has made a painting that has the look of a religious painting from the Renaissance without the religion.  He has employed the technique of atmospheric perspective used during the Renaissance where the foreground is sharp in contrast to the middle ground.  The far ground is even less distinct due to the rendering of atmospheric blurring, just as you would experience in the real world.
