Inside Passage is a temporary sound and video work to be installed at the Colman Ferry Dock in Mid-April 1994. The artwork investigates our'' interior journeys" much as the current kiosks in the ferry terminal offer travelers brochures on a variety of " external " voyages. I chose the ferry terminal as the site both for its continuous access to lots of people and for its place as a point of departure.
Sixteen residents of Seattle and King County were audiotaped. Their stories explore our collective " sense of place " using memory and the metaphor of travel to observe the past and consider the present. Images/sounds draw upon small bits of everyday life forming a kind of visual poetry. Because our intimate association with past culture, deeply affects our personal attitudes, remembering the past serves to invest present events with new meaning.
The concept of each of us as travelers in our own "inner world", as well as participants in the public space of neighborhoods or cultural communities is central to the theme of exploring our relationship to PLACE.–Artist statement
