In the late 1970s there was a group of New York artists who referred to themselves as Pattern Painters. By making paintings of complex colorful geometric patterns these artists sought to recognize the beauty and value of traditional craft objects (predominately, the so called woman's crafts like weaving and quilt making). It was only natural that at the same time crafts people were producing work meant to hang on the wall and be looked at. That blurring of the lines between art and craft continues today.
