Unlike a representational artwork in which a scene is depicted as if the picture frame were a window that the viewer looks through, much of contemporary abstraction treats the picture plain as the flat surface it really is. There is no attempt to create an illusion of space, nor does it attempt like sculpture to come into our space. This drawing quite literally uses an x to mark the spot between illusionist space and real space.
