Perhaps in the city where this photograph was taken, seeing a fisherman carrying his catch on his back is not unusual.  But a photograph can take the commonplace scene and make it strange simply by focusing our attention on it.  The artist has captured the strain of weight on the fisherman in his daily labor.
Many of Calderón’s photographs are of people carrying burdens. Portraits of a kind of human labor which is becoming more and more remote to those of us who live in an advanced, mechanized and electronically driven society. As a result, these photographs seem stranger, more foreign and   anachronistic as time passes.
