Most portraits attempt to convey something of the character of the subject, as well as achieve a superficial likeness.  This may be achieved by idealizing or emphasizing particular features, placing the figure in an expressive pose, or including objects associated with status or profession.  Here, the predominant feature is the subject's intense gaze.
