Roger Shimomura, a 3rd-generation Japanese American, creates paintings blending an ironic mixture of Japanese imagery and American pop culture. A native of Seattle, he and his family were removed to an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II. "From 1983 – 1989, I created a series of elongated paintings that were meant to allude to the similar proportions of Japanese scroll painting. The images on these canvases were intended to create a visual forum upon which issues of cultural identity might be discussed." –Artist statement
