William Ivey, the foremost Abstract Expressionist in the Northwest, attended the University of Washington, Cornish and later the San Francisco Art Institute where he studied with David Park, Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still. Returning to Seattle in 1948, Ivey devoted himself to painting and to developing a personal and unique manner of expression that appears non-representational, but is derived from observation of nature. He expresses an idea solely by means of form, line and color and without direct reference to subject matter.
