These are studies for a series of monumental paintings commissioned by Seattle City Light. The final paintings when viewed close up seem to be wildly active abstractions. Only when viewed from a distance does one finally see the loopy parade of characters evident in these studies. Mason is a serious painter working strenuously (and having a great time) depicting a ludicrous cast of characters who display themselves in their self-important “promenade.” It’s an odd hybrid, as if Saturday morning cartoons were crossed with the theater of the absurd.
