This painting was created near North Bonneville, Washington when I was in the Columbia River Gorge painting on a GAP grant from Artist Trust. I paint my landscapes on location with a calligraphy brush and black sumi ink on paper. Returning to my portable studio, I use notes on color and light from my sketchbook to add gouache to the painting. I use a roller to apply the color because it is so unpredictable, so opposite to the refined handling of the calligraphy brush.
