For a long time, artists working with traditional craft materials like glass, ceramic, fabric and paper were made to feel that they were not real or serious artists. But starting in the 1960s, there was a movement on the part of these artists to elevate the status of those materials into the realm of what had been referred to as the fine arts, as separate from the applied arts. The discussion as to what constitutes real art continues today. But the idea that it can only be made of oil paint or bronze has been generally discredited.
