My focus and intent with Departure was to utilize found organic material such as parakeet feathers (collected and naturally molted from a pet bird), mallard feathers (locally found and molted) and local driftwood. With natural material as the focal point, I added non-organic polymer clay to produce a contrasting, abstract, yet, organic and familiar feel to the piece. This piece was my largest to date and the underlying structure consists of five pieces of wood weighted in equilibrium that allows the sculpture to lean in a lifelike manner. When I completed Departure in January of 2018, it marked almost exactly two years from the date that I created my very first 3-Dimensional piece of art. –Artist statement
