"These abstract, geometric drawings are composed extemporaneously using graphite with a compass and a ruler to establish delineations that are then filled in with sumi ink or watercolor. The Butterfly Symmetry series progresses from a limited pallet of two or three colors that partially occupies the sheet of museum board, to monochromes of grey or pink that cover the sheet completely. These compositions are meditations that connect to many precedents: the spiritual geometries of Tantric diagrams, Tangkas, patchwork quilts, the Russian Avant Guard and Northwest Coast Aboriginal Art. They have a calming effect on me while I'm making them and I hope that they have a similar effect on those viewing them."
