Description: Sustenance consists of a bronze vessel nestled in the limbs of a tree. The bronze tree and vessel are perched on a granite boulder sourced from the Cedar River Watershed. During rain events, the vessel fills with water symbolizing the importance of the watershed as a provider of drinking water for the Seattle area.
Artist Statement: Sustenance represents a sacred vessel; a chalice. People have come to this place for millennia, to fill their bowls and baskets with abundant local food and water. The piece suggests both an offertory of gratitude and a receiving of the gifts of sustenance.
