Description: Drop of Life, captures the beauty of water falling through the air, designed as a drop of water. The sculpture is constructed from two layers of fire hoses mounted on hardware at different angles. A special animated LED lighting system is directed towards the artwork during the evening hours. The lighting is located at the top of the sculpture and aimed downwards at different levels to metrically fade, brighten, dim, and create a sense of a heartbeat.
Artist Statement: It was very memorable to me when visiting the fire station that there was a palpable anxiety and excitement about getting a call to action. There was a feeling of superstition about the causal relationships, between the way the firefighters spent their time and how likely it was that they would be called out to face danger and save lives. Drop of Life is lit in such a way to appear to dance rhythmically and capture the sublime beauty of water falling through the air; it also changes to reflect how often and at what time the firefighters have been called to action. Additionally, this is the kind of unexpected detail, depth of meaning, and technical insight that I think can make public art special. To illustrate to the lay public what the vast possibilities of art and the human endeavor.
