Subject Statement: This time has been full of challenges for myself for my patients. I am grateful I can still be of service to them. However, with my children home, now there is another layer of difficulty and challenge. I am trying to be there for them, while working from home. I struggle with balancing their needs and trying to work being on the phone with patients. It is a whole new ballgame for people, myself included.
Artist Statement: I approached this project with the belief that collaboration with the photo subject is imperative for creating more authentic images. I took this a step further and asked my community to help me define the word “essential workers” and asked them to nominate themselves or others to be photographed. Wanting my images to match the ethnic and cultural demographics of my neighborhood, I used the 2010 Census data to assist me in selecting participants.
