Flowers and Dirt

 “The Flowers and Dirt images create a beautiful and strange geometry. They are simply built: a large sheet of plywood, elevated on paint cans above a pile of dirt, covered w/ flowers and precisely lit. When rearranged for Dirt and Flowers (flowers cleared off; dirt troweled on; flowers arranged below) the result looks fake; that dirt seems so flat somehow, w/ the blooms reading more like a solid triangular object than the collection of flowers it really is. Through juxtaposing such bright colors with such dark, rich soil, the depth within the image feels confusing, giving the viewer an opportunity for deliberate and delightful disorientation. –Artist statement
