Seven Figures

Mark Mumford’s “Seven Figures” appear isolated from one another.  Dumbly staring or shouting into their individual voids, each of the figures is oblivious to the existence of the others or their surrounding environment.  The artist says he makes sculptures “so that the frailty and comedy of existence might find physical manifestation.  They are simple and stubborn things that without words yell out questions about identity and culture, process and dematerialization, language and lyricism, autonomy and protection.”-from Seattle Collects Seattle, Beth Sellars, Independent Curator, 1997
