Yellow Messerschmidt

This painting comes from a group of paintings and drawings inspired by the Baroque sculptor Franz Messerschmidt (1736-1783). After completing two portraits of Messerschmidt, I began in 2003 a series of color field paintings based upon seven of the artist's character heads. This piece uses as its model character head no. 39, A Hypocrite and Slanderer. Yellow Messerschmidt is the final painting in the series. –Artist statement
