Description: The artwork consists of two ceramic tile pillars and 16 tile insets in the sidewalks. The tiles were hand-carved by the artist and the tile designs were inspired by decorative ornament from cultures who have lived in South Park, both now and in the past. The two pillars are located one at each end of the business district, welcoming those entering the neighborhood by car and on foot. The art between the two pillars is in the ground plane. Sixteen strips of 6” square hand-carved tile are inset on both sides of the street. The bands of color and pattern are loosely derived from textile and pottery decoration from around the world. These artworks are sited at various points along the sidewalk on 14th Avenue S, between S Cloverdale St and S Director St.

Artist Statement: Representing neighborhood unity within the wonderful diversity of the South Park Community, Convergence incorporates twenty-seven designs inspired by the handiwork of ancient artisans from around the world. The welcoming pillars remind us of the wisdom of those who have come before and encourage us to unite as we move forward.
