Description: Matanovic’s Hollow : City connects two major features of the park – a large, bowl-shaped hollow, and from a slight rise adjacent, an expansive view of the city and beyond.  The artwork offers a way for people to physically move between two very different experiences of the land in the park and the land surrounding the park.

A wooden walkway “land dock” appears cantilevered out into the hollow, gently rising towards the sky.  The dock’s end point allows a view over and down into the wooded, wild area.  The land dock meets an existing path in a crossing which is punctuated with four cedar columns salvaged and cut from the same trunk.  A new path leads from the crossing to a gentle rise with a large, panoramic view of the city skyline and mountains.  Two benches made from salvaged cedar allow for comfortable seating while taking in the view.

Artist Statement: Hollow : City juxtaposes two worlds and two views:  one a very intimate view of a natural hollow from above, the other a very broad view of Seattle and its surroundings from the seated area.  The forms are there to attract people so they may see the richly diverse areas of Westcrest Park.  The artwork is only complete with the individual’s appreciation of that richness.
