Description: Thread is intended to provide a way for the community to thread themselves into the community center space and claim it instantly as their own.  An artistic pattern of ceiling tiles and mirrored domes guides people from the lobby to the upstairs foyer.  The artist utilized the drop ceiling, making use of polyethylene panels that were cut and laminated in a pattern influenced by Asian textiles.  These panels replace the original panels in the drop ceiling and are accompanied by nineteen mirrored domes.  The domes hanging within the art pattern and on the walls absorb and “thread” the environment of the building, the traffic on 8th Avenue, and the people inside the community center into the fabric of the community.

Artist Statement: My work is primarily focused on utilizing space and commonplace material. In this utilization I liberate an object and space of their conventional function.  Through this approach it is my philosophy that the viewer can see their relationships to space and or the objects used in a new and exciting way. Once this liberation is achieved it is my hope that this way of thinking may extend not only into questioning what art is but also who we are.
