Formal portraits often hope to achieve some sort of a
likeness of the person sitting for the portrait. Although the portrait is usually done as a
commission, artists have for centuries used their own faces as subjects. They were available, in the studio and cost
nothing. This self-portrait was likely rendered
for this reason. Whatever the reason,
the face here makes herself known to viewer.
