Masked Windows came about as I sought to restore the aging wood frame windows of an old apartment building. As I finished masking, I was struck by the light allowed through the windows. The brown paper had a mottled flannel quality and the blue tape was electric and coldly neon. The folds I had made in the paper to make it fit properly seemed to render three-dimensionality to the panes. I think how our eyes can be closed to many things, like a window with its glass masked for painting. What we see when the masking is removed depends greatly on the renewed context given by a fresh coat of paint to the same old view. We see an old vista in a new way. –Artist statement
