Description: The sculptural image is an actual working beam scale reproduced in cast bronze. Images included on the weighing platform are a banana, egg, leaf forms, enlarged microscopic plants and animals, insects, seashell, owl, giraffe, fish, mouse, frog and a snake. Each of these characters represents a broad natural classification, or biological group. Most healthy ecosystems have participants from each of these groups.
Visitors can actually balance out the working scale by moving the weight to a specific point which is labeled “balanced biological habitat,” or they can move it away from the “balanced” notch. The images that are placed upon the weighing platform represent a “balanced” ecosystem and the bio-diversity found within any given natural area.
