The ideas surrounding this work are rooted in the Ifa system of divination of West Africa. For guidance in this religion, one must consult with a Babalawo. . . There are 256 odus that relate to our lives and are told in the form of a story, poem or parable representing each individual odu. The odus are ancient and have been handed down from priest to priest for 1000s of years... Without a Babalawo it is impossible to arrive at which combination of odus would set us on the right direction. However, we can learn from the 16 primary odus and keep in mind any wisdom that we gain from them. Each odu, or path is represented by a door with a carved relief image that I feel portrays the essence of a particular odu. –Artist statement
