In 1983 Mr. Chew went to Katmandu, Nepal, and had one of his computer-generated drawings translated into a wool rug by the local crafts people.  Several years later he opened his own factory there that he called the Contemporary Carpet Center.  In this shop he produced many beautiful carpets and helped support an entire family of workers.

Regarding his decision to make carpets, he said, In a world where walls are devoid of breathing room there is still plenty of space for an artist to stretch out on the floor. –Artist statement
