Surrogates is a sculptural work that echoes the internal structures of the body, and how they relate to the external, human-made structures with which we are surrounded. The artist considers the armatures to be metaphorical construction -- an investigation into what holds us together and how apparent it is to the exterior world.
My sculptural work has to do with the internal structures of the body, and how they relate to the external, human-made structures with which we are surrounded. I am exploring the notion of armatures as metaphorical constructions -- an investigation into what holds us together, and how apparent it is to the external world. This piece is composed of cast aluminum vertebrae forms spliced together with other objects to form a portrait. It suggests the idea that the psychological qualities may be so deeply rooted that they may be evident in the physical makeup of the body. –Artist statement
