As a native of Seattle, the artist began in 1998 to paint the container cranes that flank Seattle's waterfront like huge guardian beasts. These structures took on a special energy for me after the death of my father in 1999. The cranes became attractive to me as a symbol of power and beauty that helped me through a difficult period. They inspired the artist to research the totemic traditions of the Pacific Northwest Indians who produced powerful art objects adorned with spirit animals and infused with myth.
