A native of Mississippi, Hayes began his art career as a designer for TV in Boston. He has lived and worked in Seattle for many years, continuing to travel extensively to record the interaction of mankind. "In Rajasthan, I visited a village that welcomes and gives sanctuary to Hindu holy men. I stayed at a very spare lodge where meals were taken outside. A troop of monkeys came down from a Banyan tree to beg for food and they were led by the large dominant monkey seen in this painting." –Artist statement
