Description: Washington designed a curvilinear relief pattern in the seating/planter elements to the west and north of the fountain which include inset granite disks matching the granite in the pavement. Incorporated into 6’ diameter medallions at either end of Founders’ Court are two bronze medallions adapted from George Tsutakawa’s “Century 21” coin design for the 1962 World’s Fair.
Artist Statement: Utilizing Tsutakawa’s 1962 World’s Fair “The Spirit of Century 21” commemorative coin, I incorporated two enlarged bronze versions into my granite disk design at both ends of the court. Along the central court’s concrete walls, my in-cast design with inset granite disks portrays the pattern of earth strata exposed by erosion, reflecting the meandering granite pattern in the court’s pathway.
