The word Coelacanths, means world's oldest living fish, and was used by the artist to title his 12 x 18 red granite fish created as a public commission for the Ballard Avenue Project located at the Ballard Avenue and 22nd Avenue.  This piece was used as the artist's proposal for the public piece.  James W. Washington (1911–2000) earned an esteemed reputation as one of the Northwest's major masters
