As a kid growing up in Michigan, I was either interested in making pictures or in reading. I still am. My earliest impression of seeing art was visiting the Detroit Institute of Arts, an exhibition of paintings by Jacob Lawrence about John Brown. The color and story fascinated me. Travel is important to my work. A grant from the Boston Museum School allowed me to travel for nine months in Europe, England and Morocco. The non-European aspects of North African culture have stayed with me as vivid visual experiences. They still motivate my work. –Artist statement
