A Dark Beauty: Emily + Scarlett

During a month long residency at Port Arthur Historical Site, a former penal colony located in Tasmania, Australia, Factor interviewed visitors to the site and then created painting that give voice to the subjective experience of the place. One of the first interviews I conducted was with Emily and Scarlett, two Tasmanian teenage girls, who spoke passionately about the little houses that created the affect of life during the 19th Century, which became imagery in this particular piece. –Artist statement
