The need to sleep is the great equalizer of the human condition. It overcomes the rich and the poor, the young and the old. It is universal. When sleep overtakes people, they gently disengage from the conscious world and slip away, albeit briefly, from unending social conditions. While in a state of sleep, the body rests – a rejuvenating reprieve that mimics short hibernation. Sleep, shaped by dreams, becomes an intensely personal experience. All sleepers appear passive and vulnerable. I invite viewers to become an onlooker to confront their own projections upon the sleepers. –Artist statement
