Artist Statement: The design portrays two themes in a natural-type setting: The primary theme is the interaction between human and marine life. Within the dominant area of the design one sees a large whale, two orcas, three humans and four salmon. There is a correlation between the size of the creature and the various bodies of water represented. The large whale represents the ocean, the orcas, Puget Sound, and the salmon, our rivers, lakes and streams. Within the design humans are swimming with the marine life illustrating the need for clean water for all creatures.

The secondary theme is the cycle of water: accentuating the circle format of the hatchcover, the design is broken down into a series of rings. The outside ring depicts water in our atmosphere in the form of rain. The drops of rain fall into the next ring that represents bodies of water symbolized by waves. The next and most predominant ring contains life that relies upon fresh, clean water.  The center ring represents clean water returning to our waterways through sewers and drainage systems.
