Michael Heizer’s Adjacent, Against, Upon is one of the most unusual and controversial artworks in Seattle. Created in 1976, it was Heizer’s first public art commission and his most accessible work at the time.  It is a three part sculpture with each section consisting of a fifty eight ton concrete base and a large granite boulder. The boulders were chosen by the artist from quarries near Skykomish, Washington. As the title of the work suggests, one boulder is adjacent to its base, another rests against its base, and the third rests upon its base. -from Art in Seattle’s Public Places, An Illustrated Guide, by James M. Rupp, Published by The University of Washington Press, 1992.
