Photography is frequently used as a method of recording real experiences and situations.  But the photographer is in charge of selecting the viewer's experience of that reality.  When the photographer reduces a still life to areas of dark and light, as he has done here with this grouping of mechanical objects, it may take a moment to discern what the real scene actually is.
