Born Chicago, in 1948, Notkin earned a BFA in 1970 at the Kansas City Art Institute and was one of Robert Arneson's students at University of California/Davis where he earned an MFA in 1973. He currently maintains a studio in Helena, Montana where he is active with the Archie Bray Foundation. Notkin has made several trips to China and has been deeply influenced by the centuries old tradition of Yixing pottery from which he has adopted the precise working methods and a penchant for trompe l'oeil. He uses his artwork as an extension of his conscience, believing art should be socially activist.
