School children in the United States routinely perform lock-down drills for active shooters. Debates rage over whether to arm our teachers. Along with traditional supplies of paper, pencils, and notebooks, back-to-school shopping includes the option of Kevlar backpacks. Unfortunately, this has become the norm in our country, but this is not normal. We cannot allow this to be normal. –Artist statement
