They Crossed the Ocean to Feast Upon this Land, is part of a series of paintings called, From My Grandmother’s House. The series explores the movement of women throughout the world. The work juxtaposes bits from the history, current events, and our own personal movements from place to place. This piece specifically explores the many ways women have historically participated in colonizing landscapes, often without power over their own movements but also deeply complicit in the consequences of these movements. –Artist statement
